St.
Moritz Sailing Club is well
experienced in running major sailing
events at Lake Silvaplana in the unique
Engadine Valley. The lake is well
known among world sailors not only for
it's unique alpine setting and the
legendary Maloja Wind, but also because
many international events have been held
there: most recently the Fireball Worlds
in 2007, the Optimist Worlds 2005, the
29er Worlds in 2004, the Tornado Europeans
in 2001, the Youth 470 World Championships
in 2000 and many more national
championships. A future major event will
be the Musto Skiff Worlds 2008. |

Lake
Silvaplana
is situated in an outstanding alpine
setting (elevation 1800 m / 5624 ft). The
lake is small but has proved to be an
excellent playground for high level
sailing events. The thermal wind starts
generally around noon and lasts for the
whole afternoon. It blows regularly from
the south-west between 10 and 20 knots
guaranteeing fair sailing. Boats will be
parked close to the water on the lawn on
the south west end of the lake near the
restaurant and the clubhouse (map).
Launching is easy over a wide sandy beach,
everyone at the same time. Unlike other
sites, where one sometimes has to sail a
long way out to the racing area, Lake
Silvaplana is the racing area itself.
Spectators can easily view racing from the
shore and will be closer to the sailors
than they could ever be on spectator boats. |
To get there:
The Engadine can be reached from the south
and the north by car and by train. Either
way, you will enjoy a breathtaking trip
through alpine landscapes, steep valleys
and beautiful settings. The roads
are in very good shape. The international
airports of Zürich and Milano are just a
couple of hours (by car and train) from
St. Moritz. Public transports in the
valley are well organized.

The
Engadine Valley is an alpine paradise for
tourists and sportspeople. St. Moritz is
well known as a luxury resort. Even though
many hotels in the villages are of
the four or five stars type, there is also
budget accommodation. You will be able to
find the right spot for you. A camping
ground on the northern shore of the
Lake of Silvaplana will accommodate lovers
of the fresh air. Please note: Camping
elsewhere is strictly forbidden. There are
also numerous apartments to rent in
the vicinity of the racing area (list).
The Engadine Valley is also well known
around the world for it's breathtaking
beauty. Surrounded by some of the
highest mountains of the Alps it offers
much alternatives to the fascinating
sailing you will enjoy on the lake.
Since the wind generally starts around
noon, you will have time in the morning to
sleep, repair your boat, do your shopping
and enjoy the scenery. You could rent
bicycles, hike around the lake, take care
of your tan or take a ride to the top of
one of the mountains ... |

If you stay
in Sils the boat park will be in cycling
distance. Even if you stay in Silvaplana
or in St. Moritz there is no car needed.
Public transports run their coaches
very frequently till late. If you prefer
to have your own car there is plenty of
parking space at the boat park. |
